id="article-body" class="row" section="article-body">

Inside their mild mannered exteriors, plenty of modern dishwashers hide some super tricks. Most dishwashers look similar. They are generally 24 inches wide and have a stainless steel front adorned by a simple company logo. Even the interiors tend to house two similar racks with a mix of foldable tines and spinning water jets.
Upon closer examination, the interiors of dishwashers can vary wildly in the details. The websites of every major dishwasher brand boasts of tons of available features for their models that will make the chore of cleaning up the kitchen easier than ever. Some of those features are actually up to the task. Here are the best ones you can find when shopping for your new dishwasher.

For more Smart Home
Subscribe to the Smart Home newsletter, receive notifications and see related stories on CNET.

We've linked to models from a variety of brands and retailers that include the features discussed below. Note that we haven't tested those individual models at this time.

[ Best overall]

[ Specialized jets]

[ ]

Tyler Lizenby/CNET

Aside from the usual jets at the bottom of the tub, some dishwashers have specialized jets meant for specific dishes. I love these. [ ]. You clip a baby's bottle or a water bottle to them and they'll spray directly into the bottle to make sure the bottom gets cleaned. Kenmore and Samsung offer [ ]. Load the dish in the back of the bottom rack, and these jets will hit the corners with a spray.

This is my favorite dishwasher feature because it takes part of the chore of cleaning up off of your plate -- instead of having to hand-wash your bottles, the dishwasher can take care of it. I also appreciate this feature because of how specialized it is -- if you're not regularly washing bottles or casserole dishes, you don't need to bother. If you are, this feature is a godsend.

Better yet, dishwasher manufacturers don't tend to charge a premium for these options; you can find them as nice add-ons in ordinary mid- to high-end models. If you want to hand-wash fewer dishes, consider a dishwasher with specialized jets.

[ See at Best Buy]

[ Best usability feature]

[ Good wine stem holders]

[ ]

Chris Monroe/CNET

Most dishwashers offer something to keep your stemware in place, and most are passable. Generally, it's a plastic piece that lowers onto the stem and braces it. Electrolux and Frigidaire have [ ]. Press your stem into the blue plastic and it wraps around the step and grips it.

We didn't encounter much broken stemware from any dishwasher during our testing, but if you want to feel extra secure with your fragile glasses, most Electrolux and Frigidaire dishwashers ship with these well-designed grips so you won't have to pay a premium.

[ See at Lowes]

[ Best smart upgrade]

[ Dash replenishment]

[ ]

Richard Peterson/CNET

Yes, internet-connected dishwashers exist. Most let you check on the status of your cycle remotely and can notify you when your dishes are clean. While neat in theory, most people I know run their dishwasher at the end of the day or at night when they don't urgently need clean forks. On the other hand, one smart feature is consistently useful -- Amazon Dash Replenishment.

Smart GE, Whirlpool and LG dishwashers offer this option, which will [ ] when you're close to running out. The dishwashers keep track of the number of pods you ordered and how many times you've run the dishwasher so you can take one item off of your list to worry about when you go shopping.

Smart models from all three companies tend to be at the higher end of dishwasher price ranges, but the premium is worth considering if you want your dishwasher to be at the cutting edge of tech.

[ See at Lowes]

[ Best use of the space]

[ The third rack]

[ ]

Screenshot by Andrew Gebhart/CNET

If you regularly run out of room in your dishwasher, consider getting one with a third rack. Most manufacturers offer this feature, but models do tend to be a little more pricey than ordinary two-rack options. The smaller third rack sits above the others and is meant for silverware, small cups, serving utensils and the like.

While you can only fit small items in a third rack, putting all of your silverware in a separate place lets you fit larger dishes instead of the silverware basket on the bottom rack. Shift the little pieces to the top and you'll have more room in the rest of the dishwasher for whatever else you'd like to wash.

[ See at Sears]

[ Best automation]

[ Automatic door opening]

[ ]

Screenshot by Andrew Gebhart/CNET

Several of my family members swear by the practice of opening the dishwasher door at the end of the run. They want to let out the steam so the dishes can dry better and with fewer water marks. More recent models from companies like Bosch and Samsung can now do that task automatically.

Both Bosch and Samsung use fans to keep steam from damaging your counter as it's released. Samsung's AutoRelease Dry feature actually opens the door with 5 to 15 minutes left in the cycle. The feature is designed to save time and energy by letting in fresh air to help speed up the drying process.

[ See at Home Depot]

Honorable mentions
Silence -- Higher-end dishwashers from companies like Bosch have sound ratings as low as 38 decibels. If you were in the same room as that dishwasher while it was running, you wouldn't be able to hear it. Quiet performance is a priority for a lot of dishwasher manufacturers. You'll [ usually pay more for ultra-quiet models], but it can be a nice option to search for [https://momcheap.pageride.com/importance-of-home-depot-kids-workshop/ momcheap.pageride.com] if you live in a small place or are sensitive to noise.

The InfoLight shines when the dishwasher is running, so you'll be able to tell, even if you can't hear it.

Bosch

Infolight -- Some quieter dishwashers also have an [/reviews/bosch-ascenta-shs5av56uc-24-scoop-handle-dishwasher-preview/ Infolight] that shines on the ground. They work so quietly that the light helps you know when they're actually running. Bosch and Electrolux models both use these lights, which are a nice convenience and can provide some extra entertainment if you have a cat.

Easy rack -- Certain [ LG dishwashers] let you raise and lower the upper rack with a simple lever. While not a fancy feature, it makes shifting the rack particularly easy if you need to fit tall pots and pans on the bottom for one load then tall glasses on top in the next batch.

Now playing:
Watch this:

I'm way too excited about this Electrolux ComfortLift...

1:09

Comfortlift -- The [/reviews/aeg-comfortlift-dishwasher-preview/ Comfortlift feature] from Electrolux's parent company AEG excites me. It would probably be featured higher on this list if it was available in the US. You pull out the bottom rack and it pivots and lifts up so you don't have to bend over to unload and load the dishes. It's awesome, but for now, all we can do is wait and hope that the feature will be available stateside someday.

With the right feature, a new dishwasher could exceed your expectations when helping out around the house. ‹ Slide me › Before and after: This image shows a bunker was blown to smithereens by the strike which retaliated to Assad's gas attack
Observers said al-Sharyat Air Base was 'almost completely destroyed' by the 1,000lb warheads in a 30-minute barrage of destruction that is said to have destroyed 20 planes, a dozen aircraft hangars and a fuel depot, as well as ripped up runways, storage sites and radars.
The missiles were launched from US destroyers 150 miles away in the Mediterranean Sea in response to Assad's Sarin gas attack in Idlib on Tuesday, which killed 80 civilians, including children.
Footage and photos from the ground Friday morning showed some of the aircraft shelters - which appear to be made of thick concrete, with feet of sand piled on top - partially or fully collapsed.
Others had sunlight shining in through holes in their roofs, and black scorch marks on their walls.
Destruction: These images show the extent of the destruction wrought on Syria's al-Shayrat military airfield by US Tomahawk missiles on Thursday
Damage: The photos show that the missiles - which were launched from 150 miles away by US destroyers - were terrifyingly accurate, slamming down on the shelters and ripping up runways
Rubble: Shredded metal is all that's left of this ravaged plane after the bombardment.

The Syrian government said at least seven soldiers were killed and nine wounded, though the US had tried to avoid barracks and populated buildings
Detonated: These tanks - likely containing fuel - appear to have been blow up by the massive rockets.

The Syrian media claimed nine civilians died even though the attack was launched at almost 4am local time on a military base
Shredded: Another plane shredded to pieces by the Tomahawk missiles, which have been updated many times since their use in the Gulf War.

The modern missiles can be redirected en route to a target, and were launched 150 miles away
On the ground: These damaged hangars, blackened by smoke, are at the entrance to the Syrian airfield bombarded by the US. The US targeted several such shelters across the military base, which it said held chemical weapons
Burnt out: Footage showing burnt out shelters and hangars and a damaged runway was cheered by tearful Syrians hoping that Trump's intervention would lead to Assad being overthrown
Shattered: Pictures show shards of shattered concrete strewn across the airfield at the Syrian military base this morning.

The Syrian Army called it an 'act of 'aggression'
Jets: Footage and pictures from the base screened on Russian TV appeared to show jet planes still contained in undamaged aircraft hangars
Syria claimed that at least seven of its soldiers were killed and nine wounded in the airstrike.

According to US intel, there were 12-100 personnel on the site that night. Efforts were made not to hit barracks, officials said.
SANA, Syria's state media, also claimed that nine civilians, including four children, were killed - even though the airbase was attacked at 3:45am local time.
The satellite photos show a considerable distance between the base's perimeter and the nearest built-up area.
<div class="art-ins mol-factbox floatRHS news" data-version="2" id="mol-3689c060-1bd9-11e7-8f76-554c9b6be50c" website images show destruction of Assad's air base

Usually, it's more like casual window-shopping or browsing. Apple's ARKit is aiming to move past that and make the experience turn into more buying, too.
Home Depot, Wayfair, Bang & Olufsen and 1-800-Flowers are the first companies to build extra links and buttons into Apple's pop-up AR tools on iOS. The added features were announced last June at Apple's WWDC conference as part of one of many improvements to [/news/apple-doesnt-have-an-ar-headset-yet-but-its-ar-toolkit-is-paving-the-way/ Apple's iOS augmented reality toolkit], but shopping experiences hadn't started incorporating these extra features until now.

These AR shopping tools don't require an app. They show up in Safari and link out to tools that use the camera viewfinder in a mode called AR Quick Look, which lots of apps already use. The added buttons in AR amount to links that are a faster shortcut to a shopping cart, or a store locator, or in the case of Home Depot, to chatting with customer service. It also allows anyone to [ drop Apple Pay buy buttons] into an AR window.
